Securing ASP.NET Core APIs with Authentication and Authorization

A practical approach to securing ASP.NET Core APIs with clear identity boundaries, policy-based authorization, and safer defaults.

Security problems in APIs often come from design shortcuts rather than missing libraries. A team may add JWT authentication and still end up with weak authorization, overly broad permissions, or inconsistent protection across endpoints. In ASP.NET Core, the goal should be simple: identify callers clearly, authorize actions explicitly, and make unsafe paths hard to create by accident.

Authentication answers who the caller is

Authentication establishes identity. In API systems this often means a token, cookie, or service credential that the platform can validate. Whatever mechanism you use, keep the boundary clear:

  • validate the caller once at the edge
  • convert identity into claims or principal data
  • avoid custom ad hoc parsing deep in handlers

When each feature invents its own identity logic, security review becomes much harder.

Authorization answers what the caller may do

Many systems are well-authenticated and poorly authorized. A valid token does not mean the caller should be able to perform every action.

ASP.NET Core's policy-based authorization is a strong default because it lets teams express intent:

That is much easier to audit than scattering custom if statements throughout controllers.

Prefer policies over role checks everywhere

Roles are useful, but policies usually scale better because they describe capabilities instead of job titles. A policy like ManageOrders or ViewBillingReports survives organization changes better than hard-coding Admin or Manager in dozens of endpoints.

Use roles where they truly map to platform identity, but keep endpoint protection focused on permissions and business actions.

Protect by default

Teams get into trouble when secure endpoints require special effort but anonymous endpoints are the default. In many internal platforms, it is better to require authentication globally and opt into anonymous access only when it is explicitly intended.

That reduces the chance of shipping an accidentally open route during a busy release.

Keep authorization close to the use case

Middleware and attributes are helpful, but some rules depend on the resource being accessed:

  • a user can view only their own order
  • an approver can act only within their business unit
  • a support agent can read but not modify data

These checks often belong in the application layer or handler once the resource has been loaded. Endpoint-level policies and use-case-level checks should work together.

Log security-relevant decisions carefully

You do not need to log every claim, but you should log enough context for investigation:

  • who attempted the action
  • what resource they targeted
  • whether the request was denied or allowed

These logs become important during incident response and compliance reviews.

Security is part of software design

Good ASP.NET Core API security is not only about token validation middleware. It is about making access rules explicit, testable, and consistent across the codebase. Strong defaults, policy-based authorization, and resource-aware checks usually take teams much further than complicated custom frameworks.

When security decisions are easy to see in code, they are easier to review, test, and trust.
