How to balance unit, integration, and end-to-end tests in .NET so teams catch regressions without creating a brittle test suite.

Teams rarely struggle because they have no tests at all. More often, they struggle because their tests do not match the risks in the system. They have many unit tests around low-value code, too few integration tests around real failure points, and end-to-end tests that are expensive to maintain.
A good .NET testing strategy is not about chasing a number. It is about deciding where confidence should come from.
Unit tests: protect business rules
Unit tests are strongest when they cover code with meaningful branching and business decisions:
domain methods
pricing rules
validation logic
mapping logic with important edge cases
They are weaker when used to over-mock simple orchestration code. If a handler mostly forwards calls to a repository and a logger, a fragile mock-heavy unit test may not buy much confidence.
Integration tests: verify the real seams
Integration tests are often the highest-value tests in .NET applications because they exercise the places where bugs actually happen:
EF Core mappings
transactions
serialization
middleware behavior
authentication and authorization
external dependency integration
These tests should use as much of the real application wiring as possible. For an ASP.NET Core API, that often means booting the app with a test host and hitting HTTP endpoints or handlers through realistic infrastructure.
End-to-end tests: use them sparingly
End-to-end tests are helpful for a few critical user journeys, but they are slow and can become flaky if every feature depends on them. Keep them focused on flows that matter most:
sign-in
checkout or payment
account creation
important back-office workflows
If a bug can be caught faster with an integration test, prefer that.
Test behavior, not implementation details
A common reason test suites become expensive is that they are tightly coupled to internal structure. Renaming methods or splitting one service into two should not break half the suite if behavior has not changed.
Ask this when writing a test:
am I asserting a user-visible or business-relevant outcome?
or am I asserting how the code happens to be written today?
The first kind tends to survive refactoring. The second kind tends to create drag.
Make test data intentional
Factories and builders help keep tests readable, but they should not hide the scenario. A good test shows why the data matters:

That communicates more than a giant object initializer with twenty unrelated fields.
Keep the feedback loop healthy
A suite that takes too long to run gets ignored. A practical split for many .NET teams looks like this:
fast unit tests on every save or commit
integration tests in CI and before merge
a small set of end-to-end tests on main or release flows
The exact mix will vary, but the principle is stable: use the cheapest test that gives meaningful confidence.
What to prioritize first
If a team already has some tests but low trust in them, start here:
Add integration coverage around the highest-risk paths.
Simplify brittle mock-heavy unit tests.
Keep only a few critical end-to-end journeys.
Fix flaky tests immediately instead of normalizing them.
Healthy testing in .NET is less about volume and more about alignment. When the suite mirrors the system's real risks, teams move faster because failures tell them something useful instead of just making noise.
A realistic inheritance hierarchy that rots under new requirements, and a step-by-step refactor into composed behaviours that stay easy to change and test.
